New collage
November 14, 2016
I’m proud to announce I’m part of a delightful collaboration with the musician John Vanderslice, a limited edition pairing. He supplied the music, I supplied a collage. Hope you like it!

I’m pleased to say some of my film stuff will screen in retrospective, starting this weekend in Saint Petersburg, Russia, at the amazing Message2Man Festival. Here’s an interview that almost proves this claim! My lovely hosts there are also installing the Seances interactive the Brothers Johnson and I made with the National Film Board of Canada. Messager2Man is also framing and hanging a few of my collage pieces. Saint Petersburg! Holy Dostoevsky!

I’m thrilled to report my LKAP collage show has been noticed, and even reviewed in the wonderful online art publication, Momus. I’ve never been called “safe” before, as the generous reviewer does, but I have to admit I feel like I’ve been making stuff lately that’s far too safe. I’m not yet sure how to make “dangerous” or “risky” collage. Maybe it’s not in me, maybe now that I’m getting the hang of making things pretty I’ve gotten afeared of chance, but please believe me when I say that I want to play perilously! I’ll keep trying to ratchet up the risk. That goes for the movies too — for far too long I’ve been down on all fours like a child in my own tiny back yard, studying up close the minutiae of my super-narrow and too-comfortable life. The grains of sand that get under a child’s nails are as the grains of film, and acoustic granules of audio abrasion, that got into my eyes and ears during the long inward-turning hours of unalloyed privileged comfort that were the first few decades of my “career”. Basta, I say! No more. This site will be supplying seatbelts and helmets for viewers interested in watching our next movie!

I’m trying to get some work done this week, so please do not disturb. Thank you!

Thrilled to announce I’ll be on stage in conversation with legendary Christine Vachon at Montreal’s Phi Centre on December 16th. I’ve been dying to buttonhole this generous titan for years. Now, finally, my chance! (link)

I’m off to the Wexner Center in Columbus OH this weekend, to show THE FORBIDDEN ROOM at that wondrously supportive org’s PICTURE LOCK: Their 25th Anniversary Celebration of Artist Residencies. I made my 2011 feature KEYHOLE as part of this fantastic residency programme, and the Wex has continued to keep me in “spiritual residency” ever since, supporting me in too many ways to count through the making of this latest feature, which screens Saturday night — Hallowe’en Eve!

I have no exciting trips for Follow Me this week. I’m going to lounge around my apartment, not straying outside Cambridge for once, and wait for my lovely daughter to come visit me here. There may be for an orgy of brunches involved. I need the peace that comes without putting my brain through a metal detector.

Evan and Galen Johnson cooked the pixels in these ecto-loops installed at the Phi Centre for the run of the Festival du nouveau cinéma. I can stare at these gently blobbing images forever, like a cowboy staring into the depths of a bonfire. I find comfort in their eternally secret-concealing- and-revealing gloops!

Thrilled to be visiting London this Friday night, October 9th, to show THE FORBIDDEN ROOM in IMAX! I think I might throw up!
September 23, 2015
Happy to say that not only are Evan and I showing THE FORBIDDEN ROOM at NYFF September 28 and 29, practically mano-a-mano against the pope (review and schedule) / but BRING ME THE HEAD OF TIM HORTON, the 31-minute documentary on the making of Paul Gross’s HYENA ROAD, created by Evan, Galen Johnson and me, has been a late late addition to NYFF and will be installed as a loop unspooling endlessly — well, for the entirety of Sept 28 & 29 anyway — on the Lincoln Center’s “world’s largest plasma TV screen”! (trailer and schedule)
We’re also coming to Montreal, London in October. Paris in November! Even Woodstock!
I am thrilled pink. AND sick of myself pink too.
Here’s some Bring Me the Head of Tim Horton stills.

On the occasion of John Ashbery’s birthday, we just got this lovely nod from the wondrous poet Todd Colby, writing for Fanzine (readable here). I am ridiculously proud of getting tangled up with John on this show — to the point of tears! The show closes soon, on July 31st. Sigh.

This weekend is a busy one for me in Toronto, where I’ll be part of two events.
Please check out the gloriously mad MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION (here) at the Bell Lightbox Saturday at 6 PM. Seeing this on the big screen will colour-saturate your brain!
And on Sunday afternoon I’ll intro a projection of my own picture, MY WINNIPEG (here).
Accepting all offers for free drinks afterward!

I falsely blush to report the great poet John Yau just wrote up this nice piece, readable here, about the collage show that’s on my mind these days.
Meanwhile, I now work only on postage stamp-size collage. This one is called First Day Issue — A Sheet of Nine Collage Stamps (5cm X 6cm). Though I hope to blow up all stamp collages one hundred times over. I hope to see First Day Issue at 5m X 6m sometime soon.
June 18 - July 31, 2015
Pleased to be part of the two-person show, “John Ashbery, Guy Maddin: Collages”, at the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, 724 Fifth Avenue, New York.
You can view some of our stuff here.

I’m pleased to announce my presence in Basel for the second straight weekend, this time, however, not in person, but in the form of my movie, Brand upon the Brain, which will be presented at the Basel Sinfonietta, with live music written and conducted by Jason Staczek, and live narration supplied by the inestimable Udo Kier!
Please attend, this movie is so rarely seen in this fashion, will all its live elements, the way it was designed to be seen. All the details here.

I had such a great time with the student at Zurich’s Toni-Areal art school last weekend, then crapped my pants when our Forbidden Room shared a prize with the amazing Shin’ya Tsukamoto at Basel’s Bildrausch festival. What a crazy weekend. I was given so many flowers I felt I had finally won a beauty contest.
I can also share a peek into my on-going collage journal. Two random pages here.

I’m looking forward to visiting the lovely curator Jon Vickers on April 10th at the Indiana University Cinema when I’ll gas on the Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Lecture Series. What a lovely host.
